Paul Auster from The Invention of Solitude

I thought this might resonate with those of you with young children. In The Invention of Solitude, Paul Auster describes his relationship with his mother:

I was my mother's boy, and I lived in her orbit. I was a little moon circling her gigantic earth, a mote in the sphere of her gravity, and I controlled the tides, the weather, the forces of feeling.

  1. Loved this, E. Very moving. I felt that way very much with my own mother. In a way though, her moods and ups and downs controlled my world more than the other way around. Maybe because there were four other children! I was just one of those kids that was VERY attached to mommy. She was the center of my emotional universe. If mom wasn't happy or anxious, so was I.
