Hi Everyone,
My husband Matt and I recently started watching "Six Feet Under" on DVD (yes, we're a bit late to the party) and last night's episode featured a funeral for a woman who died alone, with no one to mourn her. She requested that the following lines from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" be read at her funeral service, and as the characters (and the audience) all together pondered that big question, What Happens When We Die?, these lines struck me as both beautiful and hopeful. My favorite line is the last. Here is the excerpt:
Walt Whitman "Song of Myself" lines 115-122:
What do you think has become of the young and old men?
And what do you think has become of the women and children?
They are alive and well somewhere,
The smallest sprout shows there is really no death,
And if ever there was it led forward life, and does not wait at the end to arrest it,
And ceas'd the moment life appear'd.
All goes onward and outward, nothing collapses,
And to die is different from what anyone supposed...and luckier.

I absolutely love the sentiment of these lines from "Song of Myself". And I think it's absolutely true. Life just regenerates and reinvents itself. Life begets life which begets death etc, etc. Robin, you have made me want to crack open Leaves of Grass and read it again. Isn't it amazing how Whitman never gets old. His poems are timeless and inexhaustible.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for "Six Feet Under". I loved that show. It was like a Shakespearean car wreck. Those characters were so dark and flawed. And just the premise of the show...a family in the funeral business??? I don't think I've seen every season. I only started getting into the series at the very end. I will have to do what you're doing, Robin, and rent the DVDs. It's sad that so many of the actors from that show are now on subpar t.v. programs.

ReplyDeleteHi guys!
I have only seen ONE episode of "Six Feet Under" but my ex-girlfriend Mary LOVED the show. And it keeps coming up in conversation STILL so I am thinking I might rent it from my library and watch it. I LOVE Whitman too! So beautiful. These lines are hopeful and beautiful. If any of you don't watch "Mad Men", you MUST!! It's on par with "Six Feet Under" from what I hear. Anyone watching "The Prisoner" on AMC? Wow, trippy. Lots of conversations in that one. Anyone want to weigh in on what they think about it? Did anyone see the original? I hope everyone is doing well!
Alright, please respond if you watch "Mad Men". It might be the birth of a whole other blog...
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, if you watch, please say so. We must talk...
I am bereft because Mad Men Season 3 is over. And I was thinking about the Prisoner, but am not sure if it's my kind of show. I never saw the original 60s show.
Here is what I'm watching t.v.:
Mad Men
Project Runway (season finale left)
Top Chef (Jennifer, please don't completely break down)
Mary Queen of Shops (on BBC America)
30 Rock (so good...it's like candy)
Glee(my friend Vanessa got me into this show)
Community (it's really quite funny if you haven't seen it)
Real Housewives (I'll watch any of them except for Orange County...for some reason I can't stomach that one)
Scant on dramas here. Are there any good dramas on t.v. right now?
